A low model price does not establish a low cost to serve. Define the useful outcome, then consider retries, context size, retrieval, storage, orchestration and any human review needed to deliver it. Compare options against the same quality requirement.
Make the assumptions explicit
Separate measured usage from estimates. Record expected volume, request mix, model choice, failure rates and pricing assumptions. Use those inputs to compare a normal operating case with a higher-demand case instead of treating one forecast as certainty.
Review the commercial exposure
Look at usage pricing, minimum commitments, credits, renewal terms and what happens when demand changes. A pilot and a scaled service may need different controls. Include relevant AI vendor costs when those inputs are available.
Give growth a decision path
Agree who owns the budget and who reviews changes in usage, quality or vendor terms. Decide what evidence is needed before increasing spend. The output is a decision brief with options and next steps, not an unsupported promise that AI will pay for itself.
Inputs for the review
Available usage records, invoices, pricing terms and operating context. Agree on secure handling before sharing sensitive information. Do not send prompts, customer data or confidential exports in an initial email.
Scope boundaries
A limited AI economics review can be included in the diagnostic when relevant inputs are available. Model engineering, security assurance and production implementation are outside that initial advisory scope.
